Self-compacting concrete (SCC), also known as self-consolidating concrete, is one of the most widely used concrete types, mainly because of its self-compacting characteristics and strength. SCC is a highly flowable, non-segregating, special concrete type that can settle into formworks, and encapsulates, heavily reinforced, narrow and deep sections by means of its own weight. Unlike conventional concrete, SCC does not require compaction using external force from mechanical equipment such as immersion vibrators. In addition to these attractive benefits, as a high-performance concrete SCC maintains all of concrete's common mechanical and durability characteristics. SCC was developed in Japan in 1980s in order to achieve high-performance durable concrete structures, and with advancements in concrete technology its use has become widespread all over the world. Self-compacting concretes (SCC) are made with superplasticisers and viscosity modifying admixtures (VMAs).

Self-Compacting Concrete Market Outlook

The global self-compacting concrete market is observing significant growth owing to increasing building & construction activities & infrastructure projects, improving quality of construction in developing countries, and non-requirement of vibration processes in laying self-compacting concrete. The market is further boosted by low noise involved in construction activities using self-compacting concrete and significant reduction in overall costs of self-compacting concrete. Due to the widespread availability of urban and technologically advanced infrastructure, the demand for self-compacting concrete in developed countries is primarily required for further development of existing facilities, which necessitates the innovation of more effective and reliable concrete. However, the market is hindered by unstable cost of raw materials.

Self-Compacting Concrete Market Segmental Overview

The report analyses the global self-compacting concrete market based on raw material, type of design mix, application, end-user and geography.

Self-Compacting Concrete Market by Raw Material

Based on raw material, the market is categorized into cement; admixtures such as fly ash, superplasticizer, acrylic copolymers (AC), polycarboxylate ethers (PCE) and fibers; aggregates including sand; additions such as stone powder and others including silica fumes, ground (granulated) blast furnace slag, ground glass filler and pigments. Aggregates constitute the bulk of a concrete mixture and give dimensional stability to the SSC. Among the various properties of aggregate, the important ones for SCC are the shape and gradation.

Self-Compacting Concrete Market by Type of Design Mix

Based on type of design mix, the market is categorized into combination type SCC, powder type SCC and viscosity agent type SCC. The SCC includes large amounts of binder, superplasticizer, and/or viscosity modifying admixtures (VMA). The supplemented binder content is associated with SCMs (supplementary cementitious materials) such as fly ash (FA), ground-granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS), silica fume (SF), metakaolin (MK), rice husk ash (RHA), etc. The incorporation of SCMs into cement or concrete mixes provides many benefits to fresh and hardened concrete, such as improvement in workability and ultimate strength values.

Self-Compacting Concrete Market by Application

Furthermore, various applications of this market are categorized into columns, concrete frames, drilled shafts and metal decking. Viscosity-modifying admixtures (VMAs) are widely used to increase the stability, cohesion and robustness of self-compacting concrete, underwater concrete, shotcrete and cement grouts.

Self-Compacting Concrete Market by End-user

The end-users studied in this market are categorized into infrastructure, oil & gas construction and building & construction. SSC are widely used in ground treatment, repair of concrete, reduction of rock or soil permeability, embedding of anchors & posttensioning, rock and oil-well grouting, and sealing radioactive waste repositories etc.

Self-Compacting Concrete Market by Geography

By geography, the global self-compacting concrete market is studied across the countries of key regions such as, North America, Europe, Asia Pacific and rest of the world. In 2018, APAC held the largest revenue share as emerging countries, such as China and India, offer lucrative opportunities to market players, due to the growing urbanization and industrialization. Thus, significantly large population base, rise in construction activities and increase in disposable income are expected to drive the growth of the market in this region. Furthermore, North America and Europe is expected to witness lucrative growth over the forecast period owing to supportive government initiatives and improving infrastructure. Additionally, economic developments in countries, such as Brazil and Middle East are expected to help spur the market growth.

Self-Compacting Concrete Market Key Players

The leading self-compacting concrete market players are ACC Limited, BASF SE, Breedon Group PLC, Buzzi Unicem S.P.A., Cemex S.A.B De C.V., Firth Concrete, Heidelbergcement AG, Kilsaran, Lafargeholcim Ltd., Sika Group, Tarmac, Ultratech Cement Limited and Unibeton Ready Mix. These companies have adopted various strategies, such as new product launches, collaborations, technological advancements, M&A, to sustain their position in the market. For instance, in February 2016, Sika Group expanded its presence in Southeast Asia with new production plant for concrete admixtures in Myanmar and another one in Cambodia.
