Penicillin discovery and its medicinal uses is arguably as the most important scientific discovery of the 20th century. Penicillin antibiotics were among the first drugs to be effective against different diseases. The penicillin are used to treat a wide range of infections caused by certain susceptible bacteria and are developed at large scale production allowing to be used to kill off bacteria and prevent serious infection. In addition several penicillins are developed for oral use including phenoxymethylpenicillin, amoxicillin, the anti-staphylococcal drugs dicloxacillin, cloxacillin, and the combinations of amoxicillin and clavulanic acid. Penicillin inhibits final crosslinking stage of cell wall synthesis. Various kinds of penicillin are available in market to treat different kinds of bacterial infections. The most commonly penicillin drugs are used in the treatment of diseases such as throat infections, meningitis, and others.
The key factor driving the growth of penicillin market is increase in prevalence of contagious diseases as this antibiotics are helpful in treatment of infectious diseases to kill the bacteria. However advent of multiple drug resistance in microbes has posed new challenge to researchers. Beside rise in investments for R&D in pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical for precise and innovative drug products is further propelling the demand for penicillin market.
The exclusive COVID 19 impact analysis report by Axiom MRC provides a 3600 analysis of micro and macro-economic factors on the penicillin market. In addition, complete analysis of changes on the penicillin market expenditure, economic and international policies on supply and demand side. The report also studies the impact of pandemic on global economies, international trade, business investments, GDP and marketing strategies of key players present in the market. COVID-19 impact on the penicillin market was positive since penicillin was use majorly to treat bacterial infection and bacterial pneumonia thereby increase in production and supply was observed in penicillin market which ultimately fueled the demand.
The penicillin market is segmented based on by product type, by manufacturing process, by mode of delivery, by end user and geography
The penicillin are available in different product types including aminopenicillin, antipseudomonal penicillin, beta lactamase inhibitor, natural penicillin, penicillinase resistant penicillin
Amino penicillin is a class of semisynthetic penicillin’s which contains an amino substitution, providing a polar charge on the molecule that allows activity against gram-negative pathogens, including Escherichia coli and Haemophilus influenzae. These aminopeniciliin are recommended for wide range of infections and commonly prescribed for urinary and respiratory infections, as well as for gastrointestinal infections caused by susceptible Salmonella spp. and Shigella spp. The aminopenicillins are useful against Streptococcus, Enterococcus, E. coli, and Proteus mirabilis. Recommended treatment length is 7 days. The increasing cases of certain infection had led the demand for amino penicillin which is ultimately fueling the growth of penicillin market. Whereas beta-lactamase inhibitors are the medications that are used ubiquitously in modern medicine due to their ability to combat bacterial antimicrobial resistance mechanisms. As antimicrobial resistance poses an enormous global public health challenge.
The penicillin are manufactured by different process like synthetic process, natural process, and semisynthetic process
Penicillin is the most commonly used groups of antibiotics at present. Therefore they are derived from natural process and semisynthetic process. In natural process these penicillin are produced from the fermentation of the fungus Penicillium chrysogenum whereas in semisynthetic process they are are prepared from 6-aminopenicillanic acid. These biosynthetic antibacterial drugs is used to kill bacteria altogether or slow down bacterial growth.
The penicillin are used by various mode of delivery including oral, intramuscular, and intravenous
Oral mode of delivery is most widely used for penicillin as it is well tolerated by most of the people and has adequate therapeutic effect. Besides intravenous mode is being reserved usually for patients who have difficulty taking oral mode and is usually injected into a muscle or vein but may also be given directly into the lining of the chest cavity, into the fluid surrounding the spinal cord, or into a joint or other areas to reach in the tissues faster.
The penicillin has its major end use in hospitals, clinics, research institutes
Hospital followed by clinics has major use of penicillin due to increasing number of bacterial infections had led the patients inflow in hospital which has ultimately fueled the demand for penicillin market.
Geographically the global penicillin market is studied for the following region North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific and Rest of the world (RoW)
Asia Pacific is anticipated to lead in the global penicillin market attributed to increasing number of manufacturer in region and presence of key players is propelling the regional growth. In addition, growing incidences of bacterial infections and increasing patient awareness is further fueling the growth of penicillin market. Whereas North America is the second largest region and is expected to witness significant growth during the forecast period. The key factor for the growth of region is investments done by governments to improve the present healthcare facility for better health. The presence of U.K., France, and Germany is expected to have potential to drive the market growth due to medical care infrastructure, and high incidences of bacterial infections. On the other hand Europe is expected to grow at a rapid pace during the forecast period
The key players in penicillin market are Abbot Laboratories, Amgen, Astellas Pharma Inc., Bayer HealthCare AG, Biogen IDEC, Bristol Myers Squibb C, Bristol Myers Squibb Co, Celgine Corporation, Eli Lilly, F. Hoffmann-La Roche Ltd., Gilead Sciences Inc.,GlaxoSmithKline plc., Merck & Co., Inc., MiddleBrook Pharmaceuticals, Inc.,Novartis AG, Pfizer, Sanofi Aventis SA, Takeda Pharmaceutical Company Ltd. and Toyama Chemical Co., Ltd among others.
January 2020: Wockhardt becomes first Indian company to get nod for novel antibiotics. The products include Emrok (injectable) and Emrok O (oral), used for acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections, including diabetic foot infections. The approval is based on a phase 3 clinical study involving 500 patients in 40 centres across India. In addition wockhardt plans to take these drugs to emerging markets and in China soon. The company expects to build them into significant number of brands over the next 18-24 months.
