Geomembranes are huge impermeable membranes made of (un)reinforced polymeric materials and used to stabilize earth and to secure landfills ensuring containment of hazardous or municipal wastes and their leachates. These membranes are made up of the impregnation of geotextiles with elastomers, asphalt, or multi-layered bitumen geocomposites. Geomembranes are available in a variety of physical, mechanical and chemical resistance properties designed to meet the requirements of a wide range of applications. The products can be compounded for exposure to ultraviolet light, ozone and micro-organisms in soil. Different combinations of these properties exist in various geosynthetic lining materials to cover a wide spectrum of geotechnical applications and designs.

Global Geomembrane Market Outlook

Geomembranes are used in applications including waste management, mining, water management, tunnel lining, and others. The demand for geomembranes for its use in tunnel liners is growing significantly in the markets of the U.S. and Canada due to an increase in construction activities. Mining applications is the key trend propelling the growth of the geomembranes during the forecast period. Geomembranes are increasingly used to prevent soil erosion in land areas and water bodies present in North America thereby, promoting vegetation growth in region.

Global Geomembrane Market Segmental Overview

The report analyses the global geomembranes industry based on raw material, manufacturing process, application, and geography. The raw materials considered in this study are Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer (EPDM), High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE), Low-Density Polyethylene (LDPE) & Linear Low-Density Polyethylene (LLDPE), Polypropylene (PP), Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) and others. Furthermore, the manufacturing process used for the production of geomembranes are extrusion, calendering and others. The geomembranes find major applications in waste management, water management, mining, lining systems and others. The global geomembranes market is studied across various key countries of regions such as North America, Europe, Asia Pacific and Rest of the World.

Global Geomembrane Market Highlights

  • HDPE is the most widely used geomembrane in the world and is used more commonly internationally due to its availability and relatively inexpensive material cost. HDPE is an excellent product for large applications that require UV and Ozone resistance, chemical resistance or high-quality installations.
  • Among all the manufacturing process, extrusion segment accounted for the largest market share in 2019, unreinforced geomembranes, like the ones based on semi crystalline polymer such as polyethylene (HDPE, LDPE, etc.), are produced using the extrusion method.
  • The mining segment dominated the global geomembranes market in 2019, owing to the increasing demand for geomembranes in mining applications in evaporation ponds and heap leaching.

Global Geomembrane Market by Geography

By geography, the global geomembrane market is studied across the countries of key regions such as, North America, Europe, Asia Pacific and rest of the world. The North American region accounted for the largest market for global geomembranes market in 2019. Increased environmental awareness and initiatives related to environmental protection and the use of geomembranes for waste management have helped in the growth of the market in North American region.
